K i d s '    C o l l e c t i o n s 

Resources for children and their families are a priority in the Morton Grove Public Library's Youth Services Department. The Youth Services Department offers an extensive range of materials for young readers - books and media for fun AND facts - and provides many reading programs, crafts, and special entertainment events throughout the year for children and their families. Staff in the Youth Services Department look forward to helping you choose materials for all reading levels and interests. Along with a large selection of books and a range of popular magazines, you will find mulitmedia collections that include sounds recordings, book/cassette/CD kits, videos and DVDs, and CD-ROMs -- all available to take home. New to the collection are read-along DVDs to help our younger readers improve their reading skills and speed.

Awards
Two special browsing collections have been created to highlight children's books which have won the prestigious Newbery and/or the Caldecott Awards.

Biographies
The biography collections includes written accounts of the lives of famous individuals, life stories. Easy Biographies for children up to third grade are also available in the Easy Reader Biography section.

Board Books
Durable Board Books of all sizes are located on the floor in the center of the library where toddlers and babies can easily access.

CD-ROMs
Check out MGPL's extensive collection of educational and "edu-tainment" CD-ROMs for children.

Christmas Books
Christmas fiction and nonfiction at all reading levels are shelved together easily accessible year-round

Collection Stickers
These following subjects are highlighted with spine stickers: Easter, Halloween, Holocaust, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving, and Valentine's Day.

Computer Software
Exciting interactive CD-ROM stories and learning games for preschoolers and up are available to use in the Youth Services Department on three Macintosh computers.

Easy Fiction
This collection includes chapter books at a 2nd and 3rd grade level.

Easy Reader Nonfiction
This is a collection of nonfiction books which are written with a reading vocabulary of kindergarten through grade 2.

Easy Readers
This collection includes books for children just beginning to read.

Fiction
Books in this collection include imaginative narration and are primarily chapter books generally read by children in grades 3-6.

LeapFrog Interactive Books
Interactive book and cartridge to be used with all LeapPad learning systems except My First LeapPad. Reading levels are from Preschool to Grade 6 as well as books with specific subjects. There are two LeapPad units available for in-library use for patrons with library cards.

Media [Audiobooks, Cassettes, CDs, CD-ROMs, Kits, Videos, DVDs]
This collection, including read-along book tape kits and read-a-long DVDs, encourages youngsters to enjoy literature in a variety of ways. Music and spoken word on cassette and on CD enhance the print collection. Videos and DVDs serve the informational, educational, and recreational needs of children from preschool through elementary and middle school. All videos in the Youth Services Department are labeled with the film industry rating PG, G or NR.

Nonfiction
The nonfiction collection is comprised of informational books with an emphasis on timely, accurate and useful materials to support individual, school and community interests.

Paperback Series
The paperback series collection is reserved for works of fiction in paperback format; excluded are certain series and fiction titles that are shelved with similar hardcovers.

Parent Collection
The parent collection consists of materials to help parents and caregivers meet the ever-changing challenges of child rearing. Parents are able to browse material while their children enjoy the friendly confines of the Youth Services Department. This section will also include books that contain sensitive materials. These titles may include picture books for children that should be read with an adult who may need to explain the sensitive material. Also included in the parenting collection would be all formats of toilet training materials.

Periodicals
About 35 terrific magazines of interest to children are housed in the Youth Services Department.

Picture Books
The Picture Book collection contains works of fiction in which illustrations play an integral part. Books in this collection are, for the most part, appropriate for preschool, kindergarten and primary-aged children.

Pop-Up and Moveable Books
These books can be found in the Picture Book and Tiny Book collections. They have chartreuse dots on the spines.

Reference
A Reference collection is maintained in the Youth Services Department to provide answers to a multitude of questions. These materials do not circulate so that they may be available for in-house use by users and departmental staff to answer questions from Library patrons.

Teacher Collection
This area includes books and sets of copyright-free materials which teachers may borrow to copy for classroom use. Materials such as seasonal and theme-oriented materials, bulletin board ideas, and examples of various standardized tests are available. Teacher Resources are shelved by Dewey Decimal according to subject. In addition to this resource collection for teachers, teachers may request a Teacher's Loan period of up to eight weeks on almost all books in the Youth Services Department. Also, as a service to teachers, librarians will gather books on a requested subject and, if desired, have them checked out and ready for pick-up.

Tiny Books
Books less than 7.5 inches in size are located on special shelving on top of picture books to enable easy access to small books.
